My friend Yisroel noticed the following amusing bibliographic anomaly: The first volume of the first edition of Rav Aryeh Leib HaCohen’s Avnei Miluim (Lemberg 5576) contains a set of indices, emendations and glosses compiled and composed by the author’s son-in-law, Rabbi Shlomo Yehudah Rapaport, commonly known by the acronym of his name, Shir. Shir included an introduction in which, subsequent to an encomium on behalf of the Avnei Miluim itself, he explains the significance of his work and expresses his pride therein:
עוד דבר לי על אודות פעולתי בהשלמת החבור, ואגידנה לעיני הקוראים אף כי מצער היא. … חרולי הדפוס התערבו בינימו, ראיתי, ועל מעותי הכתב כי רבו, שמתי עיני, ושקדתי להסירו כפי יכלתי. … אמנם במעט דבריו אשר אחר העיון שפטתי’ כי צריכים תקון לשון וכדומה, הגדתי דעתי בהם במפתחות האלה אשר עשיתי, והנה לעשות מפתחות לספר אשר כל המובא בו נרשם מקומו היטב בפנים, הוא אך מלאכה ולא חכמה, לא כן בספר זה, כי לרוחב דעת המחבר מ”כ, העלים בכמה מקומות מקור הדברים, וסמך על המעיין, ובמקומות אחרים מרוב מהירת הכתיבה המיר מסכת במסכת ודף בדף, ואולי חשב להציג עוד כל דבר על מכונו, טרם הוציאו לאור, כאשר נראה מחסרון הבאור באיזה סימנים מהלכות קדושין, ומפתחות ספר כזה לא יושלמו בלי יגיעה וחפוש רב, למלא הנחסר ולתקן המעוות, זולת במקומות מעטים אשר לא מצאתי עד היום צור מחשבתם ורשמתים,
גם בארתי קצת מקומות הנראים לי קשים בתחלת ההשקפה, ותקנתי הלשון כאשר הזכרתי והיה כאשר יקרא הקורא לשאול באיזה מקום, אל ימהר להוציא דבר עד יביט במפתחות המסכתות או הפוסקים הקרובים לענין הקשה, ואולי ימצא שם דבר על מכונו.
ונוסף על זה לקטתי אחת אחת כל התמיהות וצ”ע הבלתי מיושבות ודינים וענינים חדשים בזה הספר, וקבצים וסדרתים על נכון לתועלת צעירי המעיינים, למען תת להם מקום וענין לענות בו. ובמעט מהם גליתי דעתי הקצרה, ועוררתי את המעיין על איזה דבר חדש, כאשר תחזנה עיני הקורא מישרים
ואודה ולא אבוש כי לפעמים (ואקוה כי הוא על המעט) הנטי’ אל המורגלות, אשר כחה רב בימי הבחרות, הטתני מן הדרך, לבחור בפלפול הנהוג ובכל זה מרחק רב לא נטיתי, בשגם לא בספר כתוב הבאתי דברי, כי אם בין שורות המפתחות הצפנתים, הרואה יראה והחדל יחדל …
Shir’s Haskalic inclinations earned him the disfavor of some reactionary circles, and I have even heard that some view the Avnei Miluim itself suspiciously due to his involvement with it. It is therefore noteworthy that the Or HaHaim edition of the work (Bnei Brak 5760), which proudly announces its improvements and additions over previous editions1, silently omits Shir’s contributions.
Oddly enough, though, the editors did include, on the very last page of the first volume, Shir’s note, which is primarily, as above, an introduction to his indices and glosses, which, for whatever reason, they did not include!
[Another recent edition of the Avnei Miluim (Yerushalayim 5755, published by Rabbi Yehiel Michel Ber Dimitrovsky and including his excellent ‘Miluei Hosam’ commentary) does include Shir’s indices and glosses, although merely in the form of a photo offset reproduction of the inferior original, as opposed to the rest of the work which has been redone using modern typography.]
Apropos of Shir; googling him turns up very little besides the Jewish Encyclopedia article I linked to above, but I also found Mississipi Fred’s pointer to Shir’s גל עד קובץ מאה ושבעים כתבי לוחות אבני זכרון בשדה הקבורה ישן נושן ק”ק פראג, available for free download courtesy of Google Books.

Excellent. There is a biography on Shir by Barzily, however, like much of his stuff it is disappointing. In Hutner’s dissertation on Mahritz Hayos, she discusses Shir and his relationships with many similarly minded persons.
