Purity, Poetry and Paradox

Some duets of the always wonderful Etti Ankri and Ehud Banai, from their recent בין מועד למועד show (at זאפה אמפי שוני):

Taking a break from Ankri and Banai, I recently listened to a few minutes of a very different religious Jewish singer – Lipa Schmeltzer. Here’s a clip from a performance with the Freilach band on the בני ברק-based Haredi radio station רדיו קול ברמה – the Jewish Music Report.

Lo and behold, the very first words out of Lipa’s mouth were:

איה אמצאך, ואיה לא אמצאך?

The song is from Lipa’s recent album מעומקא דליפא; here’s a clip of him singing it at a “Simchas Beis Hashoeva Concert” at Brooklyn College, Sep. 25, 2010 – YouTube.

“Everyone’s singing Rihal these days”, I said to myself, since I recalled that line as being from a Rihal poem I had once seen. But I turned out to have been mistaken, for while the sentiment is indeed Rihal’s, the wording is not. From Rihal’s beautiful קהּ, אָנָה אֶמְצָאֲךָ (here and here, and see here):

קהּ, אָנָה אֶמְצָאֲךָ? / מְקוֹמְךָ נַעֲלָה וְנֶעְלָם!
וְאָנָה לֹא אֶמְצָאֲךָ? / כְּבוֹדְךָ מָלֵא עוֹלָם!

From a serendipitously inaccurate OCR search on HebrewBooks.org, I found that the same idea appears about half a century earlier in R. Bahya ibn Paquda’s classic ethical work חובות הלבבות, where it is attributed to an anonymous “sage”:

ונאמר על קצת מן החכמים שהיה אומר בתפלתו אלקי אנה אמצאך אך אנה לא אמצאך נסתרת ולא תראה והכל ממך מלא. דומה למה שאמר יתברך (ירמיה כג) את השמים ואת הארץ אני מלא נאם ד’.1

The similarity between the aphorisms has already been noted in a footnote in the nineteenth century Maskilic periodical ציון (Zion. Ephemerides hebraicae, sive collectio dissertationum, maxime theologicorum, variorumque hebraicorum scriptorum, ad ordinem mensium lunarium disposita).2

I am not well-versed in the intellectual history of the period, but in light of the above, it seems likely that Rihal was borrowing from an earlier Spanish / Arabic (Jewish or otherwise) tradition.

[A version of the saying is also mentioned by the nineteenth century Rabbinic scholar, R. Yisrael Kitover, who attributes it to an anonymous “pious man”:

ועל דרך שאמר החסיד אלוקי אנה אמצאך ואנה לא אמצאך.3]

But from whence, then, are Lipa’s lyrics drawn? Strangely enough, searching the web ultimately yielded but one source for the song: Hayim Nahman Bialik’s translation of S. Ansky’s seminal play The Dybbuk:

בטלן ג: מהראוי לנגן זמר.

סנדר: אדרבה, אדרבה.

בטלן ג: רבונו של עולם, רבנו של עולם,
הבה, בחליל לך אנגנה.
הבה בחליל לך אנגנה.
איה אמצאך ואיה לא אמצאך?
אם באשר אלכה, שם עמי אתה,
ובאשר אפנה, לנגדי אתה,
ואין דבר אם לא אתה,
אתה הכל והכל אתה,
אתה, רק אתה, אך אתה
אתה, אתה, אתה.

כל הטוב הלא מידך אתה,
וגם הרע מידך אתה,
ואם אתה לי מה אירא רע?

Now, it is certainly unlikely that Lipa is borrowing from Ansky, but according to Wikipedia:

The play was based on years of research by S. Ansky, who travelled between Jewish shtetls in Russia and Ukraine, documenting folk beliefs and stories of the Hassidic Jews.

and so Lipa has presumably drawn on the original song which Ansky incorporated into The Dybbuk. I have been unable, however, to find any trace of this Ur-song on the Internet.

Speaking Ill Of the Dead

From the introduction to a review of Od Yosef Chai Volume 3, a restoration of recordings of Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt:

Wow. There are few things as scary as reviewing a R’ Yossele Rosenblatt album! Aside for the fact that there are and were few voices that can even compare to his, one must be very careful about is what said about anyone posthumously. For this reason, I will try to focus more on the song itself and the re-mastering more than anything else.

The implication of this paragraph is that speaking ill of the dead is more problematic than maligning the living, but as my father often points out, Halachah apparently takes the exact opposite view! As Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky notes, the latter violates the Biblical prohibition against slander, which applies even to truth, whereas the former is only prohibited by a חרם הקדמונים, which only applies to falsehood:

שאלני תלמיד א’ איך צריך להסביר מה שסיפרה התורה סיפורים אלו על אחי יוסף, וכי אין זה בגדר לשון הרע?

ומתחלה עניתי דבאמת לשון הרע אינו אלא על החיים, ועל מתים מותר מצד הדין ואינו אלא חרם הקדמונים [עיין או”ח סימן תר”ו סעיף ג’], והחרם אינו אלא על מוציא שם רע ולא על לשון הרע.

אבל באמת קושיא מעיקרא ליתא, דהרי אחי יוסף דנו אותו למיתה על פי הדין, והם פסקו כן משום שחשבו שכן הוא דין תורה ולא משום שעיוותו את הדין, [ועיין שם שהאריך בזה]1
