Mississippi Fred MacDowell recently posted about a fascinating episode recorded in the pages of R. Marcus (Meyer) Lehmann’s newspaper Der Israelit. This is as good an occasion as any to note a prominent appearance of the newspaper and its celebrated author in the Halachic literature; an entire responsum of the great Rav Haim Ozer Grodzinski’s Ahiezer (in reply to a query from Rav Moshe Sofer of Erlau (the Yad Sofer)) is devoted to the propriety of the paper printing the name of G-d (in German). It is striking that the Gaon seems to consider R. Lehmann’s practice a מעשה רב:
על דבר שאלתו בנוגע להאיזראעליט שכותב בפירוש את השם בלע”ז והעיר לו על זה הרה”ג מו”ה משה סופר הי”ו דומו”ץ בק’ ערלוא ושלח אלי תשובתו בענין זה מלא דבר בהלכה על יסוד דהגמרא בראש השנה י”ח דנמצא שם שמים מוטל באשפה, ובדברי הש”ך ביו”ד סימן קע”ט שכתב דשם של לעז מותר למוחקו מכל מקום לכתחילה אסור, ומדברי התומים והנתיבות בסימן כ”ז, …1
R. Haim Ozer ultimately concludes that ideally, the use of G-d’s actual name should be avoided, “or to do as is customary among us, to make a dash separating between the letters ג and ט”, or some other solution should be found:
ועל כן אם כי היה נכון לכתחלה לשנות ולהביא מלה אחרת כמו דער עוויגער שעפער או לעשות כמו שנהוג אצלנו לעשות קו מפריד בין אות ג’ ואות ט’ או בכל אופן שימצאו עצה לתקן להוציא מידי חשש עוררים,
And why was “הרה”ג הצדיק מוהר”ם לעהמאן ז”ל, the founder of the newspaper fifty years ago”, himself not concerned over using G-d’s name? For back then, newspapers in general were less common and therefore treated more respectfully:
ומה שלא חשש לזה הרה”ג הצדיק מוהר”ם לעהמאן ז”ל המיסד את העתון לפני חמשים שנה, באשר אז היה עתון בכלל דבר חשוב ולא נפוצו בימים ההם העתונים, ונהגו בו מנהג כבוד.
But if it is difficult for the editors to alter their customary procedure, R. Haim Ozer suggests that “an important weekly newspaper like the Israelit” is not treated disrespectfully, as it has words of Torah and Biblical verses in Hebrew, too:
מכל מקום אם הדבר קשה אצלם לתקן ולשנות מכפי הנהוג אפשר לצדד דעתון שבועי חשוב כמו איזראעליט אינם נוהגים בו מנהג בזיון לפי שיש בו דברי תורה ופסוקים גם בלשון הקודש,
He recommends publicizing in the newspaper that it should not be treated disrespectfully because of the Biblical verses and words of Torah, and with this notice, the customary practice of writing G-d’s name in German may be maintained:
ונכון לפרסם בהעתון שלא ינהגו בו מנהג בזיון משום הפסוקים ודברי תורה, ובאופן שיפרסמו כן, ישאר המנהג כמו שהיו נוהגים עד עתה בכתיבת השם בלעז.
